Handmade Art From A Mosaic Designer

By Lana Bray

Those who remember their history lessons from school will also remember about the Romans. One of the things that they left, which can still be seen today are mosaics. Which just goes to prove how long lasting they can be. If you have ever thought of an affordable piece of art, then perhaps today is a good day to find a mosaic designer.

By definition a mosaic is a decorative piece made from different colored stone, inlaid to form a picture or design. Today glass and ceramics are also used as are modern day adhesives. These decorative pieces can be whatever size or shape you decide, and they can be anywhere too.

Many people do see them in their day to day lives but hardly give them a second glance. This is disappointing when you realise the work and effort that has gone into designing and constructing something like this. Quite often they have been used to brighten up such locations as shopping malls, educational facilities and religious establishments.

One of the first things that you will have to do is to come up with a design. It is probably a very good idea if you have thought this out before you go for your initial meeting. Some people like to use computer based programs as these make manipulating the early designs easier, but still some prefer to travel the normal path of pen and paper.

Size could be a factor in your wishes, and it will also play a part in the creation of your piece. Initially the outlines can be drawn onto card, and these bits of card can have the colors annotated on them. Another way, if it is going directly onto a wall is to use a projector. This means that the optimum position is gained before anything else. However, a lot of people do prefer smaller pieces.

These smaller pieces are much simpler to do as the design can been drawn freehand. The next stage is to mix up and apply the adhesive. It is often found to be simpler if it is built up color by color.

Many feel that it is something like completing a jigsaw puzzle. In a way it is, as both require a keen eye and a steady hand. Like a jigsaw, as time progresses it becomes easier to see the picture, or design, taking shape.

Not everyone likes their art to come in regular shapes and sizes. If you are one of these people who prefer something a little out of the ordinary discus things at those early meetings, as there is no telling what might emerge. Often people want to have family pieces included within the design, maybe as a focal point. The good thing is that they will never misplace that item again.

One of the greatest things about this form of artwork is that you have worked closely with the mosaic designer at every stage. It will give you a very satisfactory feeling every time that you see this piece of art. As previously mentioned because you have been involved with every stage there will never be another piece exactly the same. These truly are uniquely individual pieces.
