A Good Read On OLED Lighting

By April Briggs

Fully known as Organic Light Emitting Diodes, these are panels that produce light when electricity is applied and made of organic materials that are carbon based. Currently, they are used to make large area panels and displays that usually are beautiful and efficient. The emission of light is enabled by bulbs that really are made of a thin layer of light emitting material. OLED lighting is the only technology that is used to make large panels that differ from point lighting or line.

The light is the closest to the earths natural light as it is soft diffused and attractive compared to other light sources. The panels have a colour manipulation characteristic, are transparent and flexible. There are several companies that are already offering the panels; they include Phillips, Konica Minolta, LG Chem. They are currently very expensive and the production is small.

Rapid advancements in performance and prices are being foreseen and it is expected that the OLED market will emerge in force in the next one or two years. UBI research also forecasts that the market will reach 82 million and experience exponential growth till 2020. UBI is considered the most optimistic analyst. Most researchers believe that this technology will not take off.

The light produced is quite dim enabling the panels to be incorporated in fixtures that can be seen by the human eye thus no need to use diffusers top cut the glare. This technology creates room for lighting designs to be developed. This technology is very similar to that of LED and has superior advantages over it which explains the advancement that has been done to this product.

The overall design and construction of these objects is of very high quality that is reflective of the nature of its source of light. The lighting elements have a lifespan of approximately thirty to forty thousand hours which lower than that of LEDs as they can go up to fifty thousand hours but still more than four times what compact fluorescent bulbs have to offer.

Most consumers are not aware of this technology creating the need for production companies to educate them. This will definitely be a challenging area for them that they will have to deal with. When people see the OLED products for the first time, they stop in their tracks as a result of their beauty. Most consumers look for lighting sources that are energy efficient which is a key benefit in the market.

Lighting elements are required to meet some standards of lumens per watt that this technology has not achieved yet. The biggest push to this technology will be when consumers are able to play in the commodity market which will lead to a lowered price. This knowledge opens new doors for designers, architects and creatives.

At home, you can entertain your guests by an OLED wall that enables you to play around with light. Developers are working to see that in the future the light produced will be responding to moods of people around it. A hidden mirror and microphone will pick out sound and motion allowing you to be depicted as a light form.
