Simple Tips To Save Heating Oil Cost

By Jamal D White

For most people, winter comes with more than just a big change of wardrobe. It comes with a boost in the heating expenses. While heating oil may take an enormous slice of your finances, after some determination and discipline, you may be able to slash your heating oil cost by a third, or even better, half. Here are some ways this can be done.

The best way to start cutting down on your heating oil expense is to turn down your thermostat. It does not have to be sudden; cutting down one degree from the temperature on your thermostat can save you about one percent of heating bill. Therefore, you can save up to five percent of your total heating cost if you cut back the reading on your thermostat from the staggering seventy percent in most homes to about 65 degrees.

Avoid warming the rooms in which you rarely spend time. Leave the rooms you spend a quarter-hour or less to stay cold. If you wish to use these rooms, you can just put on a jacket for the short time you will be there. You will be surprised at what you can save out of this simple change of tact.

Most people tend to leave their homes heating even when no one is around. This is not only a waste of energy, but is also a sure way to boost your heating bills to the roof. Make a point of turning the thermostat down by an additional ten degrees when no one is in the house, whether you are out for work, vacation, or anywhere else but home.

You may also improvise during the night in order to save heating costs. For example, you could buy a lower bed comforter or get additional warm blankets to help keep the cold out and then lower the thermostat temperature by ten degrees. A different way to warm-up during the night is wrapping a warm water bottle inside a towel to avoid the temptation of heating for extra warmth.

For most of people, the comfort of putting on jeans and lightweight t-shirts in around the house is simply too much to lower the thermostat. However, it can save you plenty of cash putting on warm clothes and turning the thermostat a notch lower when at home. This can be done using a layer of garments: an undershirt, sweater and a light jacket to give you warmth. Furthermore, instead of walking bear footed while in the house, keep your socks and slip-ons on for warmth.

Another way to ensure that you do not use too much heat to warm your house is to ensure that your house insulation is stable. Check the windows and attic for any leakages, and enforce protection from cold using plastic film. These can be found in home improvement stores and hardware.

Some people find doing laundry with warm water very comforting. However, this is not entirely necessary. Various manufacturers today produce detergents you can use with either cold or tepid to warm water. There is no need to waste energy warming up water to clean your clothes. Doing this will definitely bring a smile on your face at the end of the cold spell.
