Designing An Outdoor Space For Your Lifestyle

By Kelly Flanders

In suburban America, there seems to have been a steady increase in the attention people pay to the designs of their outdoor areas, specifically the deck or patio. A home's patio can be put to excellent use, regardless of what you want to be able to do. Whether you want a quiet area to relax with a good book, or an entertaining area to host big barbecues and summer parties, having a great design scheme can make it more appealing and enjoyable.

Nothing goes better with white than white. Keeping a simple, monochromatic color scheme can make for a sleek, appealing look that will not be overly busy or clash with the greenery around it. It can actually be a very appealing look to contrast the natural earth tones of the yard with a modern white and gray furniture setup.

If you would rather have something with more personality, you might opt for brighter, hotter colors to accent the main pieces. In these cases, less is usually more. To avoid an overwhelming explosion of color, you can try to limit the accents to small pieces, such as lighting or cushions. This can be warm and appealing without being distracting.

For a comforting, natural look, especially if you have a natural wood deck, you might try finding nice earthy pieces. Natural browns and greens will blend easily with an outdoor space, and it can make for a great place to entertain with a barbecue and then relax by a fire pit.

But if you want something really attention-grabbing, you can use bright colors to create a tropical island theme. Bright, plastic furniture and tropical plants and art can be a fun and inviting space, especially if you live near the coast.

But before you make any big purchases, you will want to have a clear plan about what you are going to be using the space for. If you plan on hosting events and parties, then you are going to need cooking and eating areas. If you would rather use it as a lounge for relaxing and conversing with small groups, you might only need some simple, comfortable seating arrangements and perhaps a fire pit. Or, if you have the room for it, a little of both. Either way, some shade is a must. You can use a standing umbrella, or one mounted to a table to create some respite from the sun if you do not have an awning. A piece of thicker fabric can also be suspended from the corners with rope to create a canopy.

Your decisions will also be influenced by the location of your home. If your neighborhood has wide spaces between properties, you can take advantage of the open feel by designing a layout that will not obstruct the view. But for homes further in town where the homes are built very close to each other, you might want to establish a sense of privacy. A tall, wood fence that surrounds your area can be a great way to have an enclosed getaway while still being outdoors.

Whatever you choose to make of your outdoor space, just make sure that it reflects your lifestyle and personality. With the right choices, you can infuse your outdoor area with just as much atmosphere and usefulness as any interior room.
