How To Replace Rollers From A Sliding Barn Door Hardware

By Estelle Larsen

Finding out that the sliding door is no longer working is highly frustrating and can cause a lot of privacy and security issues when they do not work the way they should. First thought would be replacing the whole thing, but to save you cost, you can just look for which parts that are broken and fix it. That way you do not have to get a new one.

When you get it stuck and it does not budge at all, the problem might be with the rollers. They are either worn out, tampered, cracked, or dirty, that is why it makes awful noises or tends to be really hard and heavy to move. Manufacturers tend to cut costs and end up using cheap materials that easily break for sliding barn door hardware.

Manufacturers tend to do this in order to save cost for production. And here is another problem, these products tend to be untested, meaning they did not undergo any quality checks at all. This is one of the reasons why acquiring cheap products or materials could be of a disadvantage in most cases.

The plastic becomes brittle under harsh temperatures or during changes with the weather and will wore down making it more likely to break when forcefully used. Check the rollers if they are broken, and if they are, most likely you are just dragging it instead of rolling it through the slot.

If they are damaged, they can be replaced easily. They are available at any hardware shops or home depots. You might want to go for either a better or the best quality rollers so that they would not break again and cause you inconvenience. Carry with you those broken rollers to make it faster to find the right sizes and models.

When detaching the rollers, you first need to take out the door from the tracks. The tracks may be designed either to be on the top or bottom. Ask help when removing the door since it could be heavy. With a screwdriver, look for the roller screws and take them out from the brackets. You can then place in the new ones.

Another problem, where they are not broken or worn out, is when it is dirty. Too dirty for the rollers to even roll. To make it easier for cleaning, you can do the same procedure in removing them, then use a brush and water with soap to take the dirt out.

If that did not work and the door still slides roughly, then you could try and adjust the roller screws. It has adjusting screws that you could turn and adjust them according to the level of the track and frame. Screw each side that is crooked, or screw both of them a quarter way in order to raise it and match the frame.

In cases that the door falls, it might be a bit short compared to the whole frame. When you try to move it and there is a vertical movement instead of a horizontal one, then you can try adjusting the height. There are also screws that can adjust it for the height. It is located either at the top or at the bottom.
