How Award Winning Authors Make It To The Top

By Katrina Wheeler

The road to success for award winning authors is not a simple one. Anyone aiming to be in this number needs to be prepared to work extremely hard and rise over rejection. These tips are a great starting point to help you achieve those goals.

Writing skills are like any muscle in your body, they need to be trained and conditioned to avoid pain. Any successful athlete will tell you that they train all the time and that strength building contributes to their wins. Similarly, any writer should train their skills to improve their abilities. This will ultimately lead to quality content that deserves praise.

There are a variety of methods and techniques available that can add more quality to your writing. Where possible, take the opportunity to study the art. Whether you attend a paid course at a university or a free community class, the information you gain will make a valuable contribution towards your writing skills. All of which is significant to identifying your unique voice.

It is not easy to take something you have written and put it out for all to see. However, publication is important. Start by finding a publisher who believes in the piece of work as much as you do. The editor should be open and constructive. It is not easy to let go but at some point it is a necessity.

If in doubt, publish it yourself. Authors don't always have to go the route of a big publisher. Self-publishing is available as an option and with many platforms emerging for new writers, it's one that more people are considering. This option essentially removes the middle man and places responsibility for all aspects of production on the author. This includes writing and editing the content; designing the book cover and layout; and controlling the distribution and marketing of the work.

In the publishing industry, rejection is real. As any successful author can tell you, you will hear the word "no" many times before you hear "yes." This cannot be avoided, it is just one of the many lessons you learn on the way to achieving success. Successful writers who got to where they are never gave up on the dream. If it truly is your dream, you need determination, perseverance and a very thick skin.

Writing competitions are everywhere. Some are free, some not. Either way, you should try to enter as many competitions as you can. It's a terrific opportunity to get your work read by other people, particularly those active in the industry. A lot of the times, competition judges are writers, editors or publishers. This will potentially get you the access you would not ordinarily have, especially since finalists are often provided with valuable feedback and constructive criticism for growth purposes.

Anyone looking to enter the ranks of award winning authors, needs to be willing to put in some very work and prepare for various failures along the road. They also need to make room for some serious luck, which also plays a role. Success is a combination of hard work and timing. Being ready, at the right place, just in time.
