By Bonnie Contreras

Chiavari chair, widely known as Tiffany chair or the Chiavarina, is a very elegant, usually wooden chair of Ligurian design. It was created back in 1807, by a cabinet maker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, who had lived in Italian village called Chiavari. Silver Chiavari chairs remain popular till today, and some manufacturers in Italy are still producing them on the traditional way.

Beautiful, lightweight and absolutely timeless, easy to store and maintain, and well suited for any occasion, these practical pieces are still used in the White House, for example. They were there when Barack Obama was inaugurated, and people still sit on them in Family dining Room and in the State Dining Room.

They are widely popular as rented furniture as well. They are so easy to storage, because they can easily be put on each other in high stalks, and are light enough to be carried around. Easy maintainable and highly durable, although so light, it is also easy to clean them.

Originally, they were made of wild cherry and maple wood, and after that, also of beech wood and ash. The seats were made using purple willow. Thin strips of wood were hand woven and tied according to Mr. Descalzi's instructions. The same traditional method is still used in his home town and nearby places in numerous small manufacturing facilities.

Stack ability and lightness wouldn't be so important if these pieces aren't so remarkably timeless and elegant. Today you will find them made from all imaginable materials, including bamboo, polyester, metals such as steel and aluminum, and even bronze. White ones are irreplaceable when it comes to weddings, while silver and gold colored ones make just perfect environment for any special occasion.

The design might vary a little, but all Chiavarinas are lightweight, but durable, and always especially elegant, in one word, perfectly timeless. The design itself is a work of art, and it is hard to imagine some other chair design will be able to replace it. Some designers tried to recreate similar models, but Chiavari chair is still the most popular one.

Mahogany made Chiavarina is especially popular today. Its rich, warm brown tones with a touch of red look great in both rustic and elegant ambiances. Numerous rich layers of lacquer give amazingly luxurious shine to the wood. Golden honey Chiavarinas are mostly made of different fruit woods, including cherry and walnut, but other types of wood are also used.

If you plan a wedding, your wedding planner will surely suggest white Chiavarinas for your special event. They can be combined in so many different ways, and they always look just amazingly good. If you choose your favorite color cushions and add some flowers, you will get a perfect scenery to start with. Of course, different colors are also available, including glossy black.
