Enjoying The Reading Of Supernatural Thriller Books

By Donna Gibson

Every genre of books have certain characteristics that both readers and writers can identify. This lets them know what to expect in that genre. Though it is a different genre, supernatural thriller books combine the characteristics of two genres that give them an extra excitement. This often leads to many loyal followers.

This genre combines the thriller and the supernatural genres. The thriller gives a feeling of suspense and excitement, as well as a degree of anxiety. The supernatural uses certain plot devises to allow a person to believe in the contradiction of the expectations about the natural world. A certain amount of creativity is needed for this speculative fiction to suspend belief in the nature of the world.

Since early times, storytelling has provided a means of gaining attention for the storyteller and an interest in an amazing tale to those listening. These tales serve to help them understand the world beyond their own senses. The thriller genre has helped resolve the fears and provide excitement in discovering things strange and unexplained. This us true whether it is oral or written in delivery method.

One of the characteristics of this genre is a conflict between two main characters. One of them usually had a special power. From early on, these stories were similar. They had a heroic character that entered into a battle with a character with supernatural powers. The heroic character always comes out the winner. With the combination of this and the thriller characteristics, listeners stayed interested in the saga when it was still only an oral telling.

Early tales written for enjoyment involved the supernatural as well. This propelled the story forward for its readers. It was a case of man against the supernatural, with man winning most of the time. Ghosts, witches, and curses kept the reader on the edge of their seat while reading, becoming motivated to follow the character and gain insight into their actions.

Gothic tales was an eventual evolution from these tales. Such tales evolved as that of Frankenstein and the Henry James tales. Edgar Allen Poe was also a result of these tales. His tales left one wondering if the tale was about an insane person or one under the influence of some dark force. This led to the fear that it could happen to them, making the thrill even more appealing.

Tales of shape-shifters and other unnatural characters naturally evolved from the tales of this genre. These characters had a strong visual image, making them great for adapting for television and the movies. Though the viewer is asked to suspend their disbelief about these things, directors know how to handle this and still tell a believable tale. They make use of the viewers ability to suspend disbelief and get a thrill and excitement.

Though the number of authors entering this genre is growing, they can't do away with the old tales, many of which are still enjoyed today. Many writers follow the advice to study the older authors to refine the technique of writing this kind of tale. It is a very enjoyable genre, but it is very difficult to write. However, authors seem to continue to take the reader into a strange world while overcoming their disbelief.
