Types Of Edible Flower Heads

By Lela Perkins

Many kinds of flower heads can be eaten but not all of them are necessarily going to be to your taste. The first thing to remember is that not all of them are edible. Be sure that you are certain a flower has not been sprayed with any chemicals before you eat it. That said, they are very versatile and tasty if you pick the right ones.

When choosing which flowers to eat, location is very important. For instance, make sure that you don't harvest those flowers lying by roadsides. The fumes of the cars and their general location mean that you have no idea how clean they are. Animals urinate all the time on grass and flowers, so it's best not to take any chances.

Be sure that you first identify the flower that you plan to eat. If you cannot do this with assurance, then walk away. Additionally, be frugal when it comes to using them in recipes because consuming them in large quantities might wreak havoc to your digestive system. Moreover, try using herb flowers as these generally have a taste more akin to the herbs we use in cooking.

Choosing what flowers to pick and how to eat them is a real dilemma. One of the more popular varieties is Tuberous Begonias. These have stems and blossoms that can be eaten, and they taste a little citrus-like, some might even say sour. Use them on salads as a garnish, but make sure they're not served to people with gout or rheumatism as they have oxalic acid.

One plant that most people would have heard of are carnations. These edible flowers can be put in wine or even candy. The petals have a sweet flavor, meaning they can be used in desserts. Be sure to slice away the white flower base, which has a bitter flavor. The petals add a little color to salads, but are also used in oriental cooking, in dishes like stir fries.

Flowers can be used with so many things and have so many flavors. The clover, for example, has a licorice flavor and is very often made into a tea to treat cough, colds and even gout and rheumatism. The blossoms are white and red so make sure you pick the right colors. The brown ones are a no-no because they are very bitter.

Dandelions are a very popular choice among pickers because of their very sweet taste. Picking them while they are young ensures that you have the sweetest plants. The older dandelions are very bitter and are to be avoided. It's said they taste like honey and because of the sweetness they are great in desserts and salads.

Flower heads can make great salad garnishes. Just be sure you know exactly what you're picking and that it has the flavor you want. If in doubt look the flower up and identify it. It might be best to grow edible flowers in your garden, that way you at least know where they've come from.
