All About Disc Jockeys Or DJs

By Carol Brown

What better way to make the party crowds grow wild than with the topnotch skills of the DJ. With their technical knowhow and creative artistry, disc jockeys are indeed your main men. From all the loops and tricks in scratching, break beating, punch phrasing, and looping, check out these rhode island djs.

Being a DJ entails a lot more nitty gritty than just playing songs. Some innate talent can never go amiss, especially with mixing songs, recognizing harmonies, keeping in time to the beat, you name it. You also have the technicalities tow worry about, such as with mixing on the fly, structuring a set, et cetera, et cetera.

Technicalities are actually rife in this field. Disc jockeys are given to using a smorgasbord of equipment, devices, and tools. Long ago, it used to be gramophone records and cassettes. Nowadays, however, theres a whole host of new software and technology that are even more innovated than ever before, from digital audio files, specialized laptops, you name it.

Disc jockeying is something that has kept track of the technological age. Depending on your whims, either analog or digital can be better than the other. One may prefer straight digital setups or else the old school vinyl records. Both have their advantages, and of course, they also have their disadvantages.

DJs use much specialized audio equipment. At the very least, the gizmo should be able to play from at least two sources, so that different music can be recorded and played together simultaneously, so that they may be smoothly mixed. When done properly, that enables a seamless transition to occur between recordings and create different song mixes.

And then theres also the specially designed headphones that are particular in the music industry. The headphone should be higher quality than usual, having the ability to acoustically isolate sounds, having flexible joints and headbands, and equipped with replaceable cables. That ups the usability when they are accidentally cut or damaged, or else just frayed and worn.

The technicalities here can be pretty hard to grasp. One should learn how to bring about smooth transitioning. On the other hand, there is also the scratch, from scribble to baby scratches, to drags, to pitched scratches. One should also be able to match beats and transition songs in an uninterrupted manner. Cueing songs is important in this regard, and that involves a lot of technicalities, such a moving the pitch and speed slider.

There are a few basics that need reiterating and reminding. For instance, one should take good care not to mix to vocal songs together. That will create an awkward and cacophonous noise. There is also a need to develop your own feel and sound. This involves quite a lot of practice and experimentation. One should explore different sounds, tools, and others. Add effects and some such tasteful blending.

Needless to say, this is a DJ has to have multidimensional talents and skills. It should subsume both artistic and technical capabilities. They should have the creativity to pull off a newfangled style or genre, and they should have the knowhow in handling audio equipment, using mixing consoles, and some such. One qualification that is often relegated to the sidelines but is nonetheless important is their ability to develop rapport with the audience. Their knowledge regarding their genre should be pretty much extensive, but ideally, it should stretch well beyond that.
