Home Decorating And Choosing A Colour Scheme

By Anita Hale

Let's talk about colour and colour schemes. This is a fundamental principle in interior design. In fact, it's usually the starting point to any interior design scheme. When you look at a room, and think about what look you are going for, the starting point will always be colour.

The first thing to remember is that when you decide on a colour scheme you must try not to shoehorn your favourite colours into your plans. By all means these can be considered. However, it would be wrong to make a bedroom pink just because you love the colour pin. You must think about what the space you are decorating is to be used for. What kind of atmosphere are you trying to create? Once you know this, you can set up about deciding how certain colours will help achieve this.

It is essential when thinking about colour schemes that you inspect the natural light sources in the room. Have a look at where this light falls in the room. This will also help you establish where you will need to create your own light sources. This natural light will affect what colour scheme will work best. Broadly speaking, cooler tones go with more natural light and warmer tones with less light.

But what can we say specifically about how light sources relate to colour schemes. Well, it largely depends on what direction your room is facing. For the optimum amount of sunshine you would need an east to west facing room. This would get sunshine all day because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. But how would you make the most of all this lovely sun with your colour scheme? In this instance, using neutral tones would be highly recommended. They would allow the natural light to do its work without interfering. However, you could make things more interesting by using soft furnishings to punctuate the room with colour.

You can also use neutral tones for rooms that face south or southwest. Taupes and ivories would work well. But if you'd rather have some colour, make sure you go for cooler ones. Lilacs, blues and blue greens could be good here.

In the case of a north facing room, you will encounter a very different problem! Rather than having bags of sunlight, north facing rooms have very little natural light. This is why you should consider warmer tones to add both light and brightness to the space. You can be quite bold with your decisions based on the size of the room. Smaller rooms will require more muted version of oranges, pink and yellows.

It is also essential that you balance out your colour scheme through your soft furnishings and fabrics. You will most likely already have some furniture before you redecorate the room. Therefore you should take this into account when deciding upon your colour scheme as these two elements must not fight each other. Always remember that balance is the name of the game.
