What Readers Expect To Read In Anti Hero Novels

By Frances Olson

There are two sides to every story. There always are the good guys and the bad guys. As time has passed, these two characters have been able to merge into one. This is a lot more interesting compared to the classic hero and villain story. It is also advantageous when made into a movie as you will pay one character instead of two. The article elaborates on what people expect to read in anti hero novels.

The character should be dynamic. This means they should have a little bit of both sides. You should not concentrate too much on the good or the bad aspects. They should also be deep-rooted. This is a characteristic that brings out the both the goodness and the badness of the personality in question. Things like dressing the character in dull colors all the time are inappropriate.

The good thing about an anti-hero is that your reader can be able to relate on a personal level with the personality. This is because the character is actually realistic as they are neither all good or all bad. They have human feelings such as greed, nobility, cowardliness, and even anger. This brings out the human aspect of these anti-hero characters.

No one is perfect. Everyone, no matter who they are or how important they have a weakness or a vulnerability. This means that there is something or a number of things that can gravely affect them if it were ever to occur. You should make a point of making this aspect to remain mysterious as long as you can. It also should be something other than a person they are attracted to.

The anti-hero must be selfish. This means that for every action they take, their aim ought to be achieving their personal goals. If something good comes about as a result of their actions, it will just be a by the way and would have happened quite unintentionally. This simply means the character should not care how their actions affect other people.

In order to create the villain side of your anti-hero, they should have a back story. A past that drives them to act out. Everyone has something that sets them off but how the character reacts should be a bit out of the ordinary. This scars ought to be the main reason why the charisma is out to seek revenge or even solve a mystery.

A villain does not care if they are breaking the law or not. A hero tends to abide by all the rules and make sure they break none. An anti-hero, however, is totally different. They may have no respect for the regulations of other people, but they have codes and principals that they follow and would not break them easily.

Considering they are both good and bad, they should be able to bring out different characteristics in their readers. If a reader is supportive of them all through it means that there is something not right. Make sure the good and the bad are balanced at all times.
