Discovering Screenwriting Tips From The Masters

By Gary Robinson

While most often those involved in writing for film and television have attended a theater arts program and have a degree, this is not always the case. As such, some of the most renown names in Broadway and Hollywood have provided some tips and tricks. Whether offering screenwriting tips or how to get published, these individuals have a lot to offer whether through the Gotham Writer's website or in a classroom environment.

Gotham and other similar organizations provide physical and online classes in several different writing styles. These include, fiction, non-fiction, screenplay development, scriptwriting, comedy, poetry, professional and essentials. While business writing classes are offered on a regular basis, it should be noted that this type of writing is often quite different from that of creative styles.

While the main focus is generally on creative writing programs through these workshops, there are some like Gotham who provide coursework in business and corporate writing. Whereas, authors, comedians and poets might be interested in a more dedicated course or program. For, while all writing need have somewhat of a creative aspect, business and corporate writing styles are far different from those of creative fiction and non-fiction.

Gotham and other similar workshop based programs generally offer a strong sense of networking among students. Whereas, many schools and universities offer programs with a more direct approach. In all cases, students are generally expected to participate in a variety of student events and programs. For example, many schools and universities have a theater arts department which produces plays and other events for which students are advised to audition, or participate in other ways.

When it comes to writing, there are so many different areas of interest. As such, many writers work in a myriad of different genres. For example, one might be an author, director, poet and freelance writer. Whereas, others may find it easier to focus on one specific area such as screenplay or scriptwriting.

For corporations and individuals selecting business and corporate writing courses, the organization has individuals who are willing to teach at a company or corporate location. As such, Gotham Writers can bring classes into the workplace for hands-on learning. So whether working as an administrative associate, owner of a business or in a doctor's office, hospital or other location, individuals can learn while on the job.

Whereas, those interested in creative writing can learn everything from how to enter contests to how to get published. In addition, there are classes that can teach character development and plot creation. As such, anyone interested in writing for film, television or stage might want to consider taking classes whether through Gotham Writers or another similar organization.

Writers working in the area of film and television are often working on a screenplay. Playwrights and others working on Broadway are generally writing or working from a script. While business and corporate writers are often working and writing from drawings, proposals and other documents, creative writers are often working in areas of fiction and non-fiction.
