Make A Car Bed For Your Toddler

By Alex D White

Your toddler is growing fast, and with time will inevitably need to make a transition from his/her cot or crib into a bed. When this time comes, you need to think outside the box, to make the transition easy, and the baby cooperative. A car bed is the best gift you can give to your toddler. Here are a few ideas on how to make a car bed for your toddler.

The first thing you need to do is to make a plan, and decide on what kind of car design you want for your kid. The color of the car can come later when you have chosen the design and type of car you will be basing your bed on. A popular design to choose could be a Porsche, or Ferrari, but a Zonda or Lamborghini, and any car of your choice can do.

After you have come up with the type of car you want, then you are required to draw the design. You can draw this design on a piece of your MDF where you want to construct the bed. After you have finished you can now utilize the first piece to cut out your design on the other side of the Medium density fiberboard.

Lay your template and use clamps or vice grips to secure it on the work bench. Use the jigsaw blade to refine the shaped areas of your car, and the circular saw for the straight edges. Stay within the borders of the pencil lines, and make sure the jigsaw blade stays perpendicular. Use the first piece as a template to cut out the other piece to make them identical.

If your car of choice has a slanted front like most cars, mold out a piece of the MDF to accommodate the mattress thickness, and allow the bed to move well. Swivel screws are convenient in that they can allow you to open the front when you need to make the bed. Observe the same criteria for the back in order to ensure that your toddler does not bang his/her head on any pointing pieces.

Once you have finished cutting the four main pieces you should screw and glue them together. To accommodate the screws you are required to drill some pilot holes. In addition, to ensure that you car has extra stability you should attach the head and front board to the outside edges of the long pieces.

Now that you have assembled your bed, the next step is to paint with the color of your choice. For the priming and painting of the MDF, make sure that your working area is well ventilated. For the undercoat of the inside and outside of the car, spray evenly, covering the entire piece. Allow the primer to dry, about two hours before spray painting the bed.

Attach the decals on the car for the complete authentic look. A good idea is to go for kits that have stickers resembling wheels, so if there is room in the design, use them. You can also use bumpers and headlight stickers, and when you are done, transfer the bed to the room and place the mattress on.
