How To Choose The Perfect Contemporary Area Rug

By Eugenia Dickerson

Deciding on a contemporary area rug for various rooms in your house can be a difficult thing to do. With the a basically unlimited amount of various colors, styles and types; getting the one that is just right is never easy. Most people find the best plan is take some time and follow basic steps to help pick which rug is best for the area you have in mind.

One of the first steps is to decide what the best color for the rug will be. This may seem like an easy task, but often involves more than getting the same color. It is generally a good idea to get a contrasting tone and shade so it bonds with and pulls together the other elements of the room it is going to be in. In some cases one with a pattern on it works well for this too.

The design is also an important aspect. It is more or less an extension of the owner's ideas and personality. More conservative rugs are often placed in formal areas while more flamboyant ones are placed in leisure areas. Basic geometric patterns are best for modern areas. Most people prefer floral colors and patterns in most domestic areas like the kitchen and hallways.

Something many people often forget to consider is the different effects the rug's texture can have. This is what can really add warmth to a room based on how it feels. Wool rugs with large louse piles are often warm and inviting, while the same rug with small tight piles will not be.

The materials which are used to craft them are generally divided into 2 different categories. They are basically natural and man made. Simple Wool is typically one of the most used of the natural fibers. It is quite strong, dyes well and is very durable. Another natural fiber which has gained increasingly widespread use is cotton. It has properties very close to wool fibers and it can also be washed or dried far easier.

An example of man made fibers companies use are polypropylene and nylon. These man made fibers are inexpensive to make and use. They are also easier to clean than natural fibers are. Several critics believe they lack a natural warmth natural fibers possess. They are not as eco-friendly to make as a natural fiber. Some companies have been successful blending man made and natural and man made fibers for their rugs.

Two more factors that are typically combined together are quality and size. Usually the larger a rug is the more its production quality will go down. However, larger more expensive handmade rugs are often very good quality. It is vital not to overwhelm your area with the rug. Usually using a smaller one is the best plan.

Patterned rugs are generally great at hiding small stains. A quality contemporary area rug will generally cost a little more money so get the best one you can budget for. Sometimes by going a little bit smaller you can save a lot of money so you can get a much better quality piece.
