Considerations When Purchasing Foam For Cushions

By Deborah Arroyo

Accurate measurements when ordering foam for cushions are paramount to ensure that the covers fit. The tools required for completion of this process include a pencil, a piece of paper and the tape measure. Slight adjustments are made after taking the measurements to ensure that they fit perfectly. The covers will not be loose or unnecessarily tight.

Before any measurements can be taken, the cover is emptied off damaged or old foam. A flat surface is used when taking measurements, and they are from the middle of any length. Accurate figures represent the distance between one seam and the other on the length and width of the cover. Tight corners and outside edges affect measurements and they should be avoided.

Measurements for T or L shaped cushions are also taken at the center. The lengths are straight along the middle of each section. Before writing down the lengths and ordering, an allowance of about 0.25 of an inch should be given. This length is added on the cushion as an allowance for fitting. Covers should fit perfectly well to give the room a decent look.

Cushions come in different types including foam only and polyester fiber fill wrapping. The measurements to be taken in each case are different. The thickness varies though the length and width will remain the same. The difference comes because of the additional polyester fiber fill. Your intentions should be communicated to the manufacturer to ensure that you get exact length to avoid a disastrous mismatch.

The adjustment of the cushion without a polyester fiber lining is done by a fraction of a quarter. This means that, if the length is five and a quarter inch, it is reduced to five inches. For a length of five and three quarters of an inch, it is rounded off to six inches. The adjustments are necessary to provide a cover that perfectly fits the cushion without leaving loose and unfilled areas or being too tight to the point of distortion. Adjustments should be communicated to the producer.

When a fiber wrapping is required in the foam the adjustments that need to be made are different. They affect half inches instead of quarter inches as is the case with other measurements. Adjusted measurements are included with the actual measurements when the list is submitted to the manufacturer. Other details to be included are the number of cushions needed. The manufacturer is thus able to minimize crap and wastage.

To avoid any distortion when taking measurements, a flat surface should be used. The cover should be emptied of old or damaged cushion. It is helpful to draw a sketch of the cushion and indicate the measurements on the diagram. This will avoid switching the figures which would result in something totally different.

Measuring foam for cushions is best done by experienced individuals to avoid costly mistakes. The adjustments should be minimal to ensure that the cover fits perfectly on the cushion. Ensure that it is as natural as possible to avoid messing up the seats. Accurate measurements are necessary in ensuring that the cover fits well on the cushion. Slight adjustments do not affect the price.
