Understanding The Beauty And Function Of Swedish Antiques

By Nita McKinney

People are, more and more, embracing the beauty of pieces of furniture that were created in the past, better known as antiques. Unfortunately, many of them are not necessarily functional in modern times, or they are too fancy or ornate to accommodate the modern family. Enter Swedish antiques and people get the best of both worlds.

Their simple lines were key in the creations of these Nordic designers. Because they are so simple, they can easily be brought into a modern home and work with other furnishings. And that's just the beginning!

These were very innovative people who designed according to their needs. They took function and understood it in every way, rather than focusing on intricate detailing. This is not to say that their work was not top-of-the-line, because it is. However, when comparing these designs to others of similar times with French or Italian designers, the difference is very evident. Space-saving solutions were always key to the designers thought of the future even though they designed for the present.

One thing that fantastic about antiques is that people can go all-out or just include one or two in their homes. In truth, they can be quite valuable in so they can be quite pricey. Not everyone is capable or willing to invest in them entirely. However, just a piece or two can say everything, even if it's just decorative accessories.

One of the best points out this type of furniture and its simplicity is its ability to work with other types of furniture. No matter where it may come from, no matter its color or its design, mixing and matching with Swedish antiques is easy to do. Additionally, they are usually finished in a natural tone, and that can be changed to personalize it.

With careful preparation involving sanding and repainting or staining and then finished with a sealer, the piece can be personalized. Of course, no one recommends doing this with very valuable pieces. Restoring old pieces should be left up to professionals, in order for them to maintain their value.

However, for the more common pieces that need some touching up, this is a great solution and pretty much anyone can tackle the challenge. It's a great way to breathe new life into an otherwise tired piece. For most who appreciate this look, it would be best to restore them to their original beauty, but the choice is up to the individual. One thing that's for sure is that one needn't waste money on poorly constructed and designed pieces when there is great quality out there.

It easy to warm up your home with Swedish antiques, and still have valuable furniture that can work in modern times. Many pieces can be afforded by most consumers, so it's a nice change when compared to furniture from other European countries. Regardless of that, it will maintain its value and become an investment rather than an expense.
